Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE)

Safety data are fundamental to making decisions about roadway design and operations. Through funding granted by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Center for Technology & Training (CTT) is developing features in Roadsoft and the Laptop Data Collector (LDC) to support local agencies in the MIRE Fundamental Data Elements (FDE) collection. See Guidance on State Safety Data Systems for updated guidance and clarification provided by the Federal Highway Administration on these recent legislation changes.

Current Roadsoft and LDC feature developments include several new or modified data fields (explained below) specific to MIRE data collection. The CTT is working with MDOT to continuously develop the MIRE data collection and submittal process with more features and functionality to be released moving forward.

In some data fields, there will be two MIRE data types available. Fields labeled with MDOT, as well as fields in blue, are not editable.

Push/Pull of MIRE Data

With each yearly framework basemap update, MDOT will provide MIRE data for road and intersections for use in Raodsoft. Roadsoft will provide functionality to allow this MIRE data to be “pulled” from MDOT servers, as well as the ability to “push” updated information back to MDOT servers.

See Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) Data Pull and Model Inventory of Roadway Elements (MIRE) Data Push for more information.

Collect MIRE FDE in Roadsoft - Road Module

With the Road layer visible and active:

See Use the Map Interface for general Roadsoft navigation help.

Select the desired road segment(s).

Select the View Module button from the map options.

Enter/edit data in the available MIRE specific fields using the drop-down list options.

Use the multi-edit feature to update multiple segments with the same field values simultaneously. See Use the Multi-edit Tool for help using the multi-edit tool.

MIRE Surface Type – the type of roadway surface based on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) surface type attributes for MIRE.

The MDOT MIRE Surface Type field is not editable in the Road Module. To add or edit a MIRE Surface Type, see Add or Edit a Surface Subtype.

# of Through Lanes – the total number of through lanes for the segment.

Excludes auxiliary lanes, such as collector-distributor lanes, HOV lanes, passing lanes, tun lanes, bike lanes, and transit lanes.

Travel Direction –the direction of traffic for divided roads.

Only entered if the road is divided and defined by two separate roads on the map.

Access Control – the degree of access control.

Median Type – the type of median present on the segment.

Facility Type - indication of whether the segment operates as a one- or two-way road.

Govt. Ownership – the type of governmental ownership for this road segment.

Roadsoft automatically enters Govt. Ownership. It is not editable in Act 51 databases.

Is Paved – whether the segment is paved or not based on MDOT’s rating.

MDOT AADT – Average Annual Daily Traffic based on MDOT data.

MDOT AADT Year - Average Annual Daily Traffic data year based on MDOT data.

Select the Save button to complete the data changes, or select the Undo button to revert the changes.

Collect MIRE FDE in Roadsoft - Intersection Module

These are the currently available features, and are not a complete list of features needed to meet the MIRE FDE collection requirements.

With the Intersection layer visible and active:

Select the desired intersection(s).

Select the View Module button.

Enter/edit data in the available MIRE specific fields using the drop-down list options.

Geometry the type of geometric configuration that best describes the intersection/junction.

Traffic Control the type of traffic control found at the intersection.

Select the Save button to complete the data changes, or select the Undo button to revert the changes.

Collect MIRE FDE in the LDC

These are the currently available features, and are not a complete list of features needed to meet the MIRE FDE collection requirements.

With the Road layer visible and active:

Select the desired road segment.

Select the Inventory tab.

Enter/edit data in the available MIRE specific fields using the drop-down list options.

Divided Direction –the direction of traffic for divided roads.

Only entered if the road is divided and defined by two separate roads on the map.

Access Control – the degree of access control.

Median Type – the type of median present on the segment.

Traffic Operations – indication of whether the segment operates as a one- or two-way road.

MIRE Surface Type – the type of roadway surface based on the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) surface type attributes for MIRE.

MIRE Surface Type values are not directly editable in the LDC. MIRE Surface Type application occurs automatically based on the surface definition mapping. Adding/editing the Surface Subtype field in the LDC automatically applies the mapped/defined MIRE Surface Type after data import into Roadsoft. See Add or Edit a Surface Subtype for information on mapping/defining MIRE Surface Types.

Select the Save Inventory Changes button to complete the data changes, or select a different segment to abandon the changes.
