Use the Selection Tool

The selection tool is one of the main tools in Roadsoft. Use for selecting one or more assets on the map. Most layers have the same selections settings available, with the exception of the Road and Linear Pavement Marking layers. These layers use a different set of selection options related to road segments.

Select an Asset

Select the desired layer.

Select the Selection tool from the Map Tool Options.

For help navigating the map interface, see Use the Map Interface.

Select one asset.

Select the desired asset from the map.

Select a group of assets.

Select a point on the map and, without releasing the button, drag the mouse.

Release the button when all desired assets are inside the selection area.

Use Key Shortcuts

Add assets to the current selection.

Hold down the CTRL key.

Select desired assets from the map.

Remove assets from the current selection.

Hold down the ALT key.

Select undesired assets from the map.

Access Selection Tool Settings

Select the desired layer.

Select the Drop-down list next to the Selection tool.

Select the Select By option to choose a selection style.

The Road and Linear Pavement Marking layers use different selection settings than most other layers. For instruction on using Road and Linear Pavement Marking selection options, see the sections below.

Select by Point/Rectangle – Select a point on the map and drag to select multiple assets in a rectangular area. The point selected will become a corner of the area.

Select by Circle – Select a point on the map and drag to select multiple assets in a circular area. The point selected will become the center of the area.

Select the Clear Selection option to deselect all assets.

Select the Sticky Mode option to keep previously selected assets selected while selecting additional assets.

Access Road Selection Tool Settings

Select the Road layer.

The Road and Linear Pavement Marking layers use different selection settings than most other layers. For instruction on using Linear Pavement Marking selection options, see the Access Linear Pavement Marking Selection Tool Settings section below.

Select the Drop-down list next to the Road Segment Selection tool.

The Selection tool label indicates the selected setting. For example, when selecting the Lanes setting, the tool label displays the word ‘Lanes’ instead of ‘Road Segment'.

Select the Select By option to choose a selection style.

Road Segment – Selects road segments from the map.

Framework Segment – Selects road segments from the framework file.

PR – Select road segments to also select a line of nearby segments with the same Physical Route Number (PRNo).

NFC – Select road segments to also select a line of nearby segments with the same National Functional Classification (NFC).

Act51 – Select road segments to also select a line of nearby segments with the same legal designation.

Surface Type – Select road segments to also select a line of nearby segments with the same surface type.

Lanes – Select road segments to also select a line of nearby segments with the same number of lanes.

Select the Clear Selection option to deselect all assets.

Select the Sticky Mode option to keep previously selected assets when selecting additional assets.

Access Linear Pavement Marking Selection Tool Settings

Select the Linear Pavement Marking layer.

The Road and Linear Pavement Marking layers use different selection settings than most other layers. For instruction on using Road selection options, see the Access Road Selection Tool Settings section above.

Select the Drop-down list next to the Linear Segment Selection tool.

Select the Select By option to choose a selection style.

Linear Segment – Selects road segments on the map to select their linear pavement markings.

Framework Segment – Selects road segments from the framework file to select their linear pavement markings.

PR – Select road segments to select the linear pavement markings of a line of segments with the same Physical Route Number (PRNo).

Select the Clear Selection option to deselect all assets.

Select the Sticky Mode option to keep previously selected assets when selecting additional assets.
