Add, Edit & Delete Guardrails

Using the Laptop Data Collector (LDC) is preferable for collecting guardrail data; however, guardrail data can be added, edited, and deleted in Roadsoft. For general map navigation instructions, see Using the Map Interface.

Add Guardrails

Make the Road layer visible and active.

Using the Selection tool, select the desired road segment.

Multiple segments can be selected; however, they have to connect (forming a continuous line) and have only two end points. A warning dialog box will appear if the selected segments have more than two endpoints.

Right-click on the map, select Add Feature to the Map, and select Add Guardrail.

Alternatively, select Add Feature from the map toolbar, and select Add Guardrail.

The Add New Guardrail window opens. Select the side of the road that the guardrail is on (blue=left, red=right).

Use the traveler (on the right) to adjust the guardrail length and location as needed.

Adjustment is made by clicking on either end of the guardrail, holding down the mouse button, and dragging the selection. Adjustment can be made on either end of the reference point (reference point is indicated by the green X).

Select the Miles button to change the length measurement unit from Miles to Feet.

Select Lock Length to retain the currently selected length, but then adjust the guardrail location without further adjustment to the length.

Use the buttons on the bottom left of the Add New Guardrail window to make adjustments to guardrail side and reference point.

A reference point is the beginning or end of the intersection where the guardrail length measurement starts.

Select the Switch Guardrail Side button to change the currently selected side of street to the opposite side.

Select the Switch Referenced Pt button to change the currently selected reference point to the opposite end of the selected segment.

Select the OK button.

When Guardrail Module opens, complete the appropriate Guardrail Inventory fields and add the appropriate Beam, Post, and Block material type(s).

Select the Save button.

Edit Guardrails

Make the Guardrail layer visible and active.

Select a guardrail.

Select View Module from the map toolbar.

In the traveler section (map to the left of the Guardrail Inventory section), select the desired guardrail to edit (if there are multiple guardrails on the selected segment).

Select any field in the Guardrail Module window to edit it.

Select the Edit Location link in the Guardrail Identification section to edit the location.

Select the OK button to confirm.

The Edit Guardrail Location window appears. See steps 6 – 8 in the Add Guardrails instructions (above) for help with the features of this window.

In the Guardrail Specifications section, double-click on fields to edit them.

When finished editing, select the Save button.

Close the Guardrail Module.

Delete Guardrails

Make the Guardrail layer visible and active.

Select a guardrail.

Select View Module from the map toolbar.

In the mini-map (map to the left of the Guardrail Inventory section), select the desired guardrail to delete (if there are multiple guardrails on the selected segment).

In the Guardrail Specifications section, select the Delete Guardrail link.

Select the Yes button.
