Use Crash Trend Analysis

Trend Analysis provides the ability to graphically view changes in crash data over a defined period of time.

There are three ways to access the Trend Analysis feature in Roadsoft with differences in beginning datasets noted in the instructions.

From Main Menu

When accessing Trend Analysis through the Main Menu, the beginning dataset is all available data in Roadsoft.

Select Safety Analysis in the top menu bar.

Select Trend Analysis… from the drop down menu. The Crash Trend Analysis window will open.

Select fields in the Plotting Options section to edit them.

Series is the main crash attribute for the analysis.

X Axis is the secondary crash attribute for the analysis.

The Y Axis is always the number of crashes in the dataset.

Chart Type is the type of graphical display of the data.

From is the desired beginning date of the data to be analyzed.

To is the desired end date of the data to be analyzed.

Adjust the fields as needed in Include/Exclude Values of Series by selecting or unselecting the checkboxes. Yes selections will include the value in the analysis and legend, No selections will not include the value in the analysis and legend.

Fields displayed in Include/Exclude Values of Series will differ depending on which Series is selected.

Select the Clear All link to unselect all the fields.

Select the Select All link to select all the fields.

Filter criteria can also be applied to make a more specific data selection. Select the Open Filter Builder button. For additional help with the filter builder, see Use the Filter Builder.

Adjust the Settings of the chart as needed.

Display Point Labels displays the legend labels on the chart.

Display Legend adds a legend to the right of the chart.

Fill Radar/Plot Charts on Radar and Plot chart types, select this option to colorize the space in-between the data points.

Select the Plot button to refresh the chart whenever changes are made to the Plotting Options.

Select the Send Data to csv File… link to see the chart data in spreadsheet form.

Data will include counts, x-axis values/name, series value/name, and chart heading.

Select the Copy Chart Image to Clipboard… link to make the chart available in the clipboard as an image for pasting into a document or spreadsheet.

Select the Print… link to print the chart.

Select Close to close the Crash Trend Analysis window.

Roadsoft will remember the last used Series, X Axis, Display Point Labels, Display Legend, and Fill Radar/Plot Charts.

From SMS Crash Data Interface

When accessing Trend Analysis through the SMS Crash Data Interface, the beginning dataset is either all available data in Roadsoft, or crashes selected from the map.

See Use SMS Crash Data Interface for instructions on navigating the interface.

With the Crash layer visible and active, select the desired crash sites.

To select a group of crash sites, click and drag over the desired sites using the Selection tool.

To select multiple crash sites, hold Ctrl and use the Selection tool to select the desired sites.

If no selection is made, all crashes will be displayed in the SMS Crash Data Interface.

Select the SMS Interface button on the map toolbar.

Select the Trend Analysis button.

Select fields in the Plotting Options section to edit them.

From Crash Ranking

When accessing Trend Analysis through any of the crash ranking features, the beginning dataset is a single selection from the available rankings.

Select Safety Analysis in the main menu bar.

Select Curve Ranking…, Intersection Ranking…, or Segment Ranking… from the drop down menu. See Run Crash Ranking for instructions on filtering and running Segment, Intersection, and Curve Rankings.

Select the Trend Analysis button after running the desired ranking.

Select fields in the Plotting Options section to edit them.
