View or Print a Collision Diagram

The Collision Diagram gives a visual overview of crashes and crash types that occur within a set radius of an intersection. This diagram is designed to aid in recognizing dangerous traffic patterns at intersections.

Make the Intersection layer visible and active.

Select an intersection on the map using the Selection tool.

Select Safety Analysis from the top menu bar.

Select Collision Diagram… from the drop down menu to open the Collision Diagram window.

The Collision Diagram window displays the legs of the intersection in the map.

Use the Zoom Picture 3 and Pan Picture 2 tools to navigate the map, and the Selection tool Picture 4to select objects on the map.

To see a key of all the symbols on the map, select the Symbol Key tool Picture 1.

For a better visual representation of where incoming crashes have occurred in an intersection, select the Toggle Incoming tool Picture 5. This will sort crashes into sets of blocks according to the distance away from the center of an intersection a crash occurred. Those distances can be changed with the Collision Diagram Input section of the window.

To zoom in on a specific intersection or back out to the full view of an intersection, select the Zoom tool after the Toggle Incoming tool and select the desired leg or full intersection from the drop down menu.

To view crashes that have occurred within the radius of the collision diagram that cannot be shown on the diagram, select the Unknown button Picture 6. A complete list of unknown crashes will be listed in the window that pops up. From this window each crash’s UD-10 can also be accessed.

Select fields in the Collision Diagram Input section to edit them.

Fields with blue text cannot be edited.

Crash Dates refer to the span over which the displayed crashes took place.

The Current Radius refers to the length as measured from the center of the intersection.

The Current Intersection can be changed by editing the PR Number field or the Intersection Name field. CS Number is the control section number as assigned by MDOT. CS Number can be used to further filter crash location for the analysis.

See step 5 in the Use SMS Crash Data Interface document for step-by-step instructions for finding a PR Number or CS Number. When a CS Number is selected, the associated PR Number will automatically be added. When a PR Number is selected, a CS Number is not automatically added.

The Distances of Summarized Incoming Blocks can be edited, which will change the length of the blocks shown when Toggle Incoming is selected.

Additional filters can be added with the Advanced Filter. To add additional filters, select the Open Filter Builder button. See Use the Filter Builder for additional help.
