Use the Ton to Sq. Yd. Calculator
Understand the Ton to Sq. Yd. Calculator
The calculation of lane mile costs includes surface width, right shoulder width, left shoulder width, cost per unit of surface, and cost per unit of shoulder. When adding or editing a treatment, the cost per unit values are entered directly, or these costs per unit values can be computed with the Ton to Square Yard (Ton to Sq. Yd.) Calculator in Roadsoft.
Five values are needed to make the ton to sq. yd. calculation using the Ton to Sq. Yd. Calculator.
Current Cost Per Ton
Material weight Per Square Unit (1 square yard by 1 inch thick) in pounds
Defaults to the HMA standard of 110.
Road material (surface) thickness (in inches)
Left shoulder thickness (in inches)
Right shoulder thickness (in inches)
From these values, the Cost Per Unit is calculated by finding the cost per pound and multiplying by Material weight Per Sq. Unit. Then, the cost per square yard for the surface, right, and left shoulders is calculated by multiplying the corresponding thicknesses by the Cost Per Unit. Finally, the combined shoulder cost per square yard is calculated as a weighted average (due to thickness and width) of the right and left. Therefore, the cost per sq. yd. for the surface and shoulder incorporates the specified thicknesses and the cost per sq. yd. for the shoulder accounts for the respective widths as well. The surface is calculated first, then the shoulders (both right and left) are combined and averaged.
material weight/2000 (ton) = tons per sq. yd. (inch thick)
tons per sq. yd. x current cost per ton = cost per sq. yd. (inch thick)
If treatment costs are calculated using the Ton to Sq. Yd. Calculator and either of the shoulder widths for the subtype are changed after the calculation is completed, the shoulder cost per sq. yd. becomes invalid and the calculator must be used again.
Use the Ton to Sq. Yd. Calculator
From the main menu, select Pavement Management.
Select Surface Type Definition.
Select the desired surface sub-type.
Select the Add Treatment button to add a new treatment.
Select the Edit Treatment button to edit an existing treatment.
Select the Ton to Sq.Yd. Calculation link.
When adding a new treatment, complete the appropriate fields for the new treatment. See Add or Edit a Treatment for help.
Complete the five fields discussed previously (current cost per ton, material weight, road material (surface) thickness, left shoulder, and right shoulder thickness).
The form displays the changes in the calculations as fields are completed.
Select the Apply button to accept calculated values.
Select the Save button to accept the calculated values for the selected treatment.
