Manually Install SQL Express

Microsoft SQL Express allows Roadsoft users to create and manage databases that multiple users can access. Roadsoft-specific SQL instances are available for download from the Roadsoft website.

SQL Express can be installed as part of the Roadsoft installation. However, sometimes the installer encounters issues and it is necessary to manually install the SQL instance. There may also be agencies with software policies in place that requires downloading SQL Express directly from the Microsoft SQL Installation Center.

Using the latest compatible version of the SQL software available is usually best. Refer to the Roadsoft System Requirements for SQL compatibility.

Once the desired SQL Express is installed, see Set Up SQL Express Sharing for instructions on sharing the SQL instance with other users on the network.

Most of the installation is straightforward: open the installation center, click through the installer pages, and read and accept any terms. Leave everything on the default settings until the Database Engine Configuration page.

On the Database Engine Configuration page:

Select the Mixed Mode radio button from the Authentication Mode section.

Select the Enter password field and enter a secure password.

Make sure to remember the password because it is necessary for creating, backing up, and restoring Roadsoft databases.

Passwords must be at least eight letters long, include a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, and not be the name of a computer or program. For more information about Microsoft password requirements, see the Microsoft Password Policy page.

Select the confirm password field and enter the same secure password.

Select the Add… button to enter administrative user accounts, or select the Add Current User button to add the current computer account as an administrative user.

SQL Express 2017 requires at least one administrative user.

Select the Next button.

Then continue clicking through the pages, leaving all settings as default, until the installation begins.
