Update SQL Server

As of January 1, 2023 the Center for Technology & Training (CTT) can no longer support SQL Server 2012 (all versions including Express and Enterprise) as a result of Microsoft’s decision to terminate support for it. The CTT is continuing support for SQL Server versions: 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2019. For help locating your SQL Server version, review the Locate SQL Server Version documentation.

Agencies running Roadsoft databases using purchased versions of SQL Server (Enterprise, Business Intelligence, Standard, etc.) should contact their office technical support for SQL Server update assistance.

See Understand the Need for SQL Server for more information on why the SQL Server application is a necessity.

Update SQL Server Express to a Newer Version

Write permission on the server is required for networked server installations.

  1. Install the newest instance possible.

SQL Express installers can be found at http://roadsoft.org/downloads/sql-downloads

  2. Create a database backup. See Back Up, Move, & Restore Database for instructions.
  3. Restore the backup to the new server. See Back Up, Move, & Restore Database for instructions.

Please Note: While it is possible to do steps 3 and 4 using SQL Server tools, it is important to use the functionality provided by Roadsoft/MERL to ensure the process goes smoothly and successfully.

  4. Log into Roadsoft and connect to the new Server/Database via the Options->Change Server/Database button.
  5. Confirm that the connection is successful
  6. Connect all other users to the new Server/Database.
